For the June walk at Rutland Water, we'll be meeting in the Barnsdale car park and heading east towards Whitwell.
I'd not been there before but went with Sol yesterday to check it out and it's very easy to find. The cycle hire shop at Whitwell very kindly gave me some printed maps of the route so PM me with your address if you'd like me to post one out to you.
Re. the car park, follow the brown touristy road signs for Rutland Water North Shore then take the turn for Barnsdale. It's down the same road as Barnsdale Hall Hotel (not Barnsdale Lodge which is on the other side of the road). Go beyond the hotel and the car park is clearly signposted. Take that turn (it's on the left) and keep trucking until you can go no further - although there are several car parks off to the right and left, the hound rendezvous venue is the last one.
Location ofrip-off pay station
The toilets are clean and the cafés at both Barnsdale and Whitwell ok for a cuppa and an ice cream. I didn't see any bins for poo or general rubbish en route but I'm not the world's most observant woman. I did notice benches situated at intervals and tried most of them out for the purposes of in-depth research
The condition of the trail was suitable for pushchairs and mobility scooters and wide enough to walk 4 or 5 abreast.
Random strangers grabbed for track width illustration purposes
There were trails through the woods which afforded enough cover to avoid us getting drenched in a downpour or shade from the sun if June 8th turns out to be a scorcher. There were notices here and there about sheep but no woolly critters were in evidence yesterday.
See you there!

- Car park charge: £3.00 (I have already fired off a letter to Anglian Water to complain at this extortionate rate )
- Pay station: opposite the sign for the café. "Our" car park - Barnsdale Wood - is about another 200 yards further, so I'd stop the car and get your ticket on the way rather than parking first and walking back.
