Is the March walk going to be at Watermead then, as suggested by Chris? 2 pm? Meeting in the North End Car Park?

That will be ok as long as we don't get too much rain as its taken ages to dry up from the heavy rain of a few weeks ago.A couple of people did say on the last walk they wouldn't go to Watermead as there are too many irresponsible dog owners letting their dogs run off lead.We use the south end most days and haven't had any real problems during the week,Although it gets very busy at weekends so we rarely let Suggs and Molly off lead at weekends.

Claire Sounds good to me and Sol Happy to swim if it's rained a lot or go somewhere else if non-swimmers would prefer a different venue. Fingers crossed for a Watermead and a dry spell! ;D

Claire no.2 mentioned a greyhound virus and the article she posted here seems to counsel against mixing with other dogs. Presumably there is a potential problem with mass walks and also in kennelling dogs whilst this virus is raging. What does everyone think?

Surely this virus effects all dogs not just greyhounds But if anyone is worried about taking the dogs on a mass walk then maybe we should give the march walk a miss ? but having said that people are still more than happy to be putting their dog/s in kennels where they probably can still pick it up

This virus does affect all dogs but has been mostly in greyhounds because of the food - horsemeat that was infected - at least that is my understanding. There was a case in a lurcher and a Japanese akita. There have been no new cases reported for at least a week. The latest info is available at www.ngrc.org.uk The Animal Health Trust and NGRC recommend foot and mouth style precautions - washing feet and mouths. Disinfecting kennels, yards etc with Virkon S, avoid horses and suspect dogs. Racing - both greyhound and whippet is still on with these precautions, so if you want to walk then that probably comes in the same category. The kennel cough vaccine gives some protection from the usual bugs, but may not cover this one as it is a different strain. Symptoms are similar to kennel cough - high temp, dry cough, off food. With a secondary infection of pnuemonia - this is the part that has killed dogs. We won't be there - partly because of the virus, with Tiny's weakened immune system I'm not taking any chances but also because of his foot.

If the walk is still on, I'm hoping to be there with my two. Just as I will be at the M & G at Ullesthorpe this weekend. Yes, there is a risk, but if we worried about everything, we'd never even leave the house! Claire

Yes, there is a risk, but if we worried about everything, we'd never even leave the house! Claire Have to say that that's my thought too. Not that I'll ever need to, but I think I'd be far more worried about this risk in terms of kennelling than a group walk. At least there we're out and about in fresh air for a limited period as opposed to our dogs being in confined spaces and enforced close proximity with others for a longer period. Alison, you definatley dont have Gymnophobia.... ;o) Oh, but I do Kate - why do you think my "Coombe Abbey" experience mortified me so?
